The Perfect Party Drink: Recipe for Sangria Wine with Cinnamon and Blood Oranges

Depending on the type of red wine you use, whether it is light bodied like a Beaujolais or deep and rich like a Cabernet, add the sparkling water to taste. Sangria is best enjoyed the day it is made, otherwise the oils from the citrus rind begin to impart flavor.

recipe for sangria wine

This alcoholic beverage was created in Spain over 2000 years ago out of necessity. People were trying to find ways to make cheap wine more tasty, so they started mixing it with spices, fruit juice and fruit chunks. And according to wikipedia only Spain and Portugal can label their product as Sangria.

Traditionaly no alcohol is used except the wine. If you want your sangria to pack more of a punch, you can add a quarter of a cup brandy per bottle of wine (60ml brandy per 750ml wine).

Usually brandy is added to recipes that require a lot of orange juice and soda. This recipe requires the juice from 1 orange and no soda or ice, so the alcohol of the wine is enough to make a light and refreshing drink.

The beauty of this sunny day favorite is that it only takes a few ingredients and the flavor combinations are endless! And once you have the basics down you can add your own twist. The best news is there is no wrong way to invent your own signature sangria.

When it comes to choosing the white wine for your sangria your best bets are dryer, more acidic, and crisp fresh whites like Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, or Grenache Blanc. An Albariño, Moscato, or rosé would be nice too. But also, we live by the rule, pour what Paso Robles wine you like!

I use a medium-bodied red blend or a fruit-forward Zinfandel to make this cocktail, because it doesn't have the benefit of hanging out in a pitcher with a bunch of fruit like traditional sangrias do. Merlot would also work well here. The flavors of both Merlot and Zinfandel blend well in recipes without fading into the background. You'll find the same wine selections in my Red Wine Hot Chocolate recipe, which I think you should definitely make in colder months. Just saying.

You'll notice I'm not adding any additional liquor beyond the Grand Marnier. That's for two reasons: I like the taste of wine and I'm not trying to get gassed-out-of-my-mind on two of these. I've already told you my friends and I drink them in swimming pool. Safety first.

Then try these other awesomely easy wine cocktails: Cranberry Rosé (3 ingredients!), Pineapple Rosemary Crush, & this Raspberry Port Sparkler on my friend Meg's website. I've written a few wine cocktail recipes for California Wines over the years, and Meg took the photos. Best. Collaboration. Ever.

Dress up any happy hour party with this boozy Red Sangria created from full-bodied dry red wine, brandy, and highlighted with fresh-squeezed oranges, lemons, and limes. A splash of ginger ale tops the drink with a bit of effervescence. But the supreme delight of this cocktail pitcher is the wine-saturated fruit you get to eat when the glass is empty.

Summertime Berry Sangria. White Wine Sangrias are a perfect warm-weather drink and are light and refreshing. Add in some fresh peaches, cherries, and berries, such as strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and/or raspberries which make for a beautiful touch to the white wine.

Holiday Sangria. Red Wine is best for a festive Holiday Sangria because of its bright color. The recipe found in this post is perfect for your Thanksgiving or Christmas cocktail. Add in some star anise, and cinnamon sticks. You could change up the fruits for garnishing in glasses with fresh cranberries or pomegranate seeds.

Love this recipe! It may be that I bought cheap orange juice that was watered down, but I added about a 1/4 more and it helped mask some of the cranberry after taste. I also sprinkled a bit of cinnamon which made it feel more festive for our Christmas get-together. Mocktails for the win!

This easy white wine sangria recipe is made with peaches and pineapple, making it a refreshing summer cocktail. Make a pitcher of this white wine sangria to share at your next summer party or to invite neighbors over to sip a glass on the front porch.

This white wine sangria recipe is made with just five ingredients and can be made in 15 minutes or less! Substitute or add additional fruits to create your own flavor combination. See below for suggested variations!

A good rule of thumb for any sangria recipe is to mix it up the night before and let it refrigerate and muddle together for several hours before serving the next day. That said, you can make it a couple hours in advance and it will still be seriously yummy. As the pitcher gets lower through the evening, you can top it off with more wine and keep the party going all night!

I often serve additional fresh fruit on the side so friends can scoop peaches and pineapple into their glass then top it with sangria. When properly chilled before serving sangria does not generally need to be poured over ice, but ice is never a bad idea on a particularly hot summer day!

While I'm ready for the cooler temps of fall and winter, I am not ready to release the bright and long-lasting sunshine of summer. I'm going to make this recipe over the holiday weekend and enjoy some time outdoors with my family. Thanks for sharing!

The temperature has seriously climbed since we spoke about wine last. Remember February when we were celebrating beef stews and wintery afternoon brunches? Well, things have changed mister.

In my experience, sangrias usually need a lot of fruits and some resting time. Make sure to mix this a couple of hours ahead to let the fruit soak in the wine and the flavors intensify. This can even be made and left to rest overnight if you are hosting a summer brunch. 2ff7e9595c
