For the next few years Annie secretly conducted an investigation with a particular theory in mind. She created a special file on the Bandit collecting various news clippings of their crimes. A number of people were suspected of being the ACB including the notorious "Fountain Pooper", but they were eventually cleared. The Bandit continued their crimes, now known as "cracking", even brazenly slotting three students during a Greendale and City College baseball game. All the while, school administration officially denied their existence. This led Annie to believe that a cover up was taking place and the culprit might actually be a faculty member. It wasn't until the study group's fifth year at school that Annie was given a chance to try and confirm her long-held suspicions.

After a year of no ACB incidents being reported, the Bandit struck again. This time their victim was Garrett Lambert who barged in on Shirley's Sandwiches grand reopening ceremony to alert everyone to the ACB's return. An emergency meeting of the "Save Greendale Committee" was held to deal with the matter. Pelton showed them a letter sent to him by the Bandit which stated that more "crackings" were going to occur. Professor Duncan was asked to join them as Dean Pelton hoped he could create a psychological profile on the Bandit. Feeling that her theory about a faculty member being the Bandit would be ignored, Annie asked Jeff to help carry out a separate secret investigation. He refused at first but changed his mind when Annie was kicked off the official investigation and he saw how much the cause meant to her.
Meanwhile, Annie started to believe that Ian Duncan was the actual perpetrator after learning he was a Dave Matthews Band fan and had a roll of quarters on his file cabinet. Duncan did not appear on the initial shortlist of "Dave" fans because he reveals he uses an older, British version of Facebook. She shared with Jeff her suspicions and found that he had discovered something significant as well. Inside a hallway closet, he found that the ACB's phone call was in fact a prerecorded message. It was on a laptop which was linked to a switch board that rerouted the call. When Annie tells Jeff about Duncan they rush off to apprehend him only to hear him get "cracked". The two see the real culprit rounding a hallway and give chase only to run into Shirley. When she informs them that Pierce Hawthorne just passed away, the pursuit is immediately forgotten. After Duncan, the "crackings" stopped and Star-Burns recanted his confession despite the school officially recognizing him as the culprit. No investigation on the Ass Crack Bandit is currently open ("Basic Intergluteal Numismatics").
Meredith is following April, telling her she has no time for this as two more moms came in. April says she'll be fine as long as no one's crowning. They enter April's office, where Cristina is feeding a mouse a donut while researching an alternative surgery for her neck guy. April snatches the donut and says it could kill the diabetic mouse. Cristina asks why the mouse is in her office. So that Meredith can run tests on it. Meredith says Bailey blames her for making Richard lose his trial, so the last thing she wants is Meredith working on the trial. April says that is why she can do it in secret, which Cristina finds the worst idea ever. Meredith agrees. "I am your chief resident, Dr. Grey!" April yells, making both Meredith and Cristina laugh. "Which means if you cross me, I will make your life a living hell," April says with a lower, more forceful voice. She tells how she will do that, impressing Cristina and making Meredith agree to the plan. Before leaving the office, April asks if it worked because she changed her voice, but Cristina tells her to walk away now before she embarrasses herself. Cristina gets another text from Owen and says duty calls. Meredith asks if they're talking again or if it's just sex. "Hot, dirty, stand on my head sex," Cristina replies, which Meredith interprets as no. Cristina doesn't care about talking. If Meredith wants to talk, Cristina suggest they talk about Meredith wasting her fifth year with vaginas and mice.
Meredith is sitting in April's office, working on the mice problem when Alex walks in, asking if she's planning to be a vet now. Meredith tells him April dumped the trial on her, but she's not annoyed because she turns out to be good with mice and she found April's secret snack drawer. April comes in and closes the drawer, then notices her entire office has post-its on the walls. That's Meredith's way of helping her, so she'll have to get over it. Meredith asks her to steal a healthy mouse, but April says she can't because Bailey hasn't left the lab in 48 hours. Alex imitates her voice, which makes April decide to go for it anyway. Cristina comes in, asking Alex to tell her what it feels like to have a bad outcome as she takes a snack out of drawer. Cristina asks what would happen if she took her name off the case. Alex says she can have his old guy asking for a TAVI, which Cristina says is just asking for a bad outcome. Lexie comes in and tells Meredith that Derek found a way to remove the tumor, but Mary decided not to do the surgery because Clay is afraid of the risks. Meredith asks Lexie if she told them how good Derek is. Lexie says she kind of did, making Meredith question if she has to do everything herself. She leaves, followed by Lexie. Meanwhile, Alex comments that Cristina's texts to Owen are hot.
Known as "Cakes", Auville, (has also been credited as Martin Auville, and J.A. from Olney) was born in 1970.[5] He was raised in Bowie, Maryland alongside fellow Junkies Eric Bickel and John-Paul Flaim, and attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland. After high school, Auville studied communications at Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland, about which he is occasionally ridiculed for achieving a 1.5 grade point average (GPA) one semester;[5] he then managed a local Toys Я Us store until making radio his full-time occupation in 1996.[6] Auville's family currently lives in Olney, Maryland. He married his wife, Amy, in 1995. They have three children, Kurt Joseph (1997), Juliet (2002), and Brendan Craig (2004). After the birth of their third child, Auville had a vasectomy and has since been mocked with the name "Johnny Blanks".[6] Auville is the most successful poker player among the group with multiple cashes in the annual JPO and a surprise 15th-place finish in the PPC Aruba World Championship.[7]
The Junkies have sponsored an annual "Junkie Poker Open" event typically held at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Texas hold'em poker tournament has gained some notoriety as former World Series of Poker contestants (Lee Childs, among others) have participated in the events. As part of their 20th year celebrations they held a special JPO in Las Vegas at the Aria Resort and Casino. In October 2017 they held their first JPO in the Washington D.C. area, hosting it at MGM National Harbor.[citation needed]
The Junkies created an international controversy on December 5, 2013, when they interviewed Rob Ford, the mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. At the time of the interview, Ford was embroiled in a scandal resulting from his admitted use of drugs and alcohol.[24][25] The interview was conducted while the Junkies were hosting their periodic gambling tournament at The Borgata. Producers Matt Cahill and Matt Myers arranged for the interview by appealing to Ford's interest in the National Football League and most of the interview focused on Ford's predictions for that weekend's upcoming NFL games. During the course of the interview, Bishop asked Ford to confirm the latest press accusations that he had tried to buy the incriminating video that allegedly showed him smoking crack cocaine. Ford denied the accusation and shifted the interview back to the topic of football.[24]
Canadian media closely followed the interview especially since Ford had yet to respond to their questions about trying to purchase the incriminating video.[24] At the end of the interview, Ford invited the Junkies to host the show in his Toronto office and also agreed to come on the show periodically to discuss football. Within hours, major American media outlets, including CNN and NBC, featured news stories about the interview.[24][26][27]
